"Setting an Example"
NEWS-SUN STAFF REPORT
Sixty needy families will eat turkey today thanks to Yong Tae Kwon Do centers in Grayslake and Round Lake Beach where students, parents and instructors have purchased the birds for donation to Kids Hope United for the past seven years.
Russell Gray, black belt and chairman of the business, said giving back is an important concept to Yong Lee, a native of Korea, who founded the centers. Mr. Lee grew up in a World Vision orphanage and "didn't always have something special for the holidays," Gray said.
As a nonprofit member of the Illinois Korean American Tae Kwon Do Union, the Yong centers are able to purchase the turkeys at a discount through Aldi's in Round Lake Beach.
The Yong Tae Kwon Do centers also adopt a family each year and "makes their Christmas," Gray said, as well as raise money for other worthy causes throughout the year.
"It's the right thing to do," Gray said. "In martial arts we teach leadership, and to build leaders for tomorrow we have to set an example."
